Welcome to a public XMPP server for Kiwis. A place to chat away from the corporate platforms that quietly harvest our data, our messages, and then advertise back to us. We don't do that, and we never will.

How do I sign up?

Grab in invite from an existing user or email the admin below, and register either on the web form or in-app via scanning the qr code. A few options for Client Apps:

Settings auto-discover, however if you want DirectTLS for your client it is on 5223

What is on offer

• OMEMO encryption - end to end, on by default in most clients.
• History that follows you - start on your phone, finish on your laptop.
• Group chats that don't need everyone to sign up to the same company.
• File sharing - send that photo.
• Voice and video calls. Supposedly this works. We should probably test it.
• Federation - the whole point. Your address is yours, and it talks to everyone else's.

House rules

Short version: don't be a dick. Long version:

• No spam, no scams, no harassment.
• No illegal content. Keep it legal under New Zealand law, since that's where the server is.
• Accounts that go quiet for twelve months may get tidied up. Log in occasionally and you're sweet.

Break these and you'll get removed without much ceremony. There's no appeals process because there's no department - it's just us.

How reliable is this?

This is a hobby service. No SLA, no support desk, no up-time guarantee, no warranty of any kind. While we are generally available throughout the day at intervals, it is maintained in evenings and weekends by volunteers who also have jobs, families, and a lawn that needs doing.

But it'll probably be up. Our personal servers have been online for years now. And we use this service ourselves as our main chat, so if it is down, we will know about it and be working on it. We probably care more than any commercial offering that is presumed to be reliable... but we suggest you don't run your business on it, and don't store the only copy of anything you'd cry about losing - there is only a few weeks retention for uploads anyway.

We don't sell data. Logs are minimal and rotate out. Messages that we can read, we don't want to, and messages you encrypt we can't read anyway.
